  • Are you finding it difficult to manage your anger?

If you can answer yes to even one of these questions, you may have an anger management problem.

Anger is a normal emotion (secondary emotion) that is generated out of how you manage other emotions (primary emotions) that you feel as a result of some situation or encounter that you experience.

For example; John’s wife is an alcoholic and John can no longer cope with her drinking. He gets angry and becomes aggressive with her. She blames John’s behaviour for some of her drinking.

When John found his wife in a drunken state, his immediate response was to become aggressive and verbally abuse her. When he had an opportunity to reflect, he discovered that his aggressiveness developed out of his inability to effectively manage the fear and helplessness (primary emotions) that he felt for the future of his relationship.

Fear and helplessness about his relationship were ‘triggers’ for John’s anger response. Known his triggers, John learned more effective ways of responding. He discovered that fear and helplessness are ‘Control Issues’.

In the case of his wife’s drinking John discovered that he had little or no control over his wife’s behaviour, but could learn to control his own behaviour. By changing his behaviour John stopped being aggressive to his wife and had more control over his own life. John’s wife could no longer implicate John’s behaviour as part of her reason for drinking.

Anger is natural and normal. Just like any other emotion, we have the innate ability to feel angry and the right to let others know what we are feeling. However, often the behaviours that we display when we are angry are the problem, not the anger itself.
